Hi,

First forum post. Loved the Austin Mini for years and I've finally decided I've got the time to spare.

I'm shortly going to be in the market for a Mk3 and I've made the (very tough) decision to stick with A-Series engine.

I'd like to 'eek' out some extra performance though.

I've been spending a lot of time researching cylinder heads recently and I'm interested by the 7-Port.

Trouble is; I personally don't like the look of carbs sticking through my bonnet - but I want good flow!

So: I'm interested to know if anyone has come up with an Elegant (I appreciate this is personal preference) solution that won't give me poor flow or result in cutting/swapping panels.

If I can't find an elegant solution I'll probably go for one of the Stage 4 Cylinder Heads on MiniSport (or Similar).

Of course if anyone has any alternative suggestions that would be greatly welcomed too :)

Thanks,

Quite a few options. Throttle bodies, bike carbs or go old skool with some Amal carbs. These are all pretty narrow and should squeeze under the bonnet

You can get very decent power from a well modifed 5-port cylinder head set up, even using carbs. How much power are you looking for and what kind of use?

I don't like MiniSport, had have a bad experience with them a while back and never used them since.

For a well modified 5-port head I would try someone like Brett Sims at www.brettsimsmotorsport.co.uk

Considering how much time I've spent reading the forums and talking to people its surprising how many people have advised against MiniSport.

I'm targetting 150bhp eventually, even though it's just a daily runner. Although; my daily runners have been known to get thrashed about a bit.

Looking to use a 1275, possibly 1380 block.

Also looked up a few forced induction solutions to help me reach that magic number.

Found the SC 7 Port (http://twinkam.co.uk...ducts/SC216-001)

with the optional Plenum (http://twinkam.co.uk.../Products/SC228). Also comes with the Engine Management Kit which is handy - I like bolt on.

Might contact SC to check that plenum would fit under the round nose - it suggests the throttle bodies do but doesn't mention the plenum as far as I can tell - I would assume it does though.

Any opinions on SC or that particular approach?

You're going to need forced induction to get 150bhp in a daily driver...

of all the 7 port heads the SC one is best, much better prot design,

having run a minisport 7 port with a turbo i can outline some of the pitfalls, heat management is a bit of an issue with these heads, and i had problems with exhaust valves binding up in the guides, also with these heads you really need to counterbore the sparkplugs into the head another 5mm or so, then you can use plugs from motorbikes (eg zzr1100) and get some beter heatrange options. the inlet ports are a bit big too, not as bad as the old AKM head that its based on, but it wont be ideal with a small cam, you'll want at least a 286 or similar,

the alloy 7 ports (from webcon?) do apparently have casting issues somtimes due to coreshift, but i suspect this is true of the minisport head too, apart from that they are basically the sam, but probably deal with heat a bit better

I'm pretty sure the SC plenumn will fit in a round nose, that will then give you the option of a rotrex or turbo. it is a fair chunk of money, buit for what you get is pretty reasonable,

have a look through this thread, http://www.turbomini...d=458563&fr=300
