Hi, just wondered if anyone on here has cancelled their tax when paying via DD?

I put the car on SORN on Thursday, then went to the bank on Friday to cancel it there too, but looking on my internet banking, it's been taken out already, but with tomorrow's date on when it is due (3rd)....

Anyone else had any problems like this?
Dispite me cancelling it both ways prior to the due day, they have still charged and I can't even use the bloody thing

Such a faff.

They say on the Internet that they won't renew the tax for the month if there is no valid MOT, which there isn't as that expired on the 29th July.

I put it on a SORN on the 30th

Cancel it as well through bank on 31st

And still they take it out. What the hell lol.

Edit: it's showing as SORN, but I'm assuming that is because the MOT has expired, do you think I'll get Augusts payment back?

Thanks

All direct debits are covered by the guarantee scheme. If the DVLA can't help, go to your bank and tell them the debit was in error. The process is to return the funds first, then investigate, so you'll definitely be able to get your money back.
I would try DVLA first though.

As above try the DVLA first but do expect to be messed around in a combination of bureaucratic incompetence and just plain indifference. Also be careful of premium rate numbers as it can cost a fortune to inform them of their mistakes if you aren't careful.

Direct debits can't be stopped (or started hence initial payments being by debit card on your first payment on say 10 months like car insurance) instantly, takes about 7 working days ime, I've had one go out then be automatically refunded once they had received my v5 notifying a keeper change.

Agreed. The DD process has a five working day clearing system, so it was probably already in flight when the tax was cancelled.

I see, I did think whether I should do it sooner to be sure, but thought well I might as well wait till the 29th seeing as the MOT was out then anyway, plus was still before the due date like they say, but yeah, 5-7 working day period before makes sense.

I was paying for tax by DD. The time came about when I decided to SORN it. Did so online and I haven't been charged since.

IIIRC, it was halfway through the month, though.

Yeah I think it's because I maybe left it a little short notice.

I've checked my bank again and it does say that it's been requested for the 3rd, but status is cancelled, so I'll still give DVLA a ring, but looking at it I think it'll be returned automatically, could be wrong though. Never needed to cancel a DD before, so not 100% sure, but looks as though it's on hold till due date (3rd tomorrow) and because it's cancelled then it won't go through to them and will be back with me whenever

Edit: whereas if I done it sooner they would not of even tried.

I completely forgot about ringing DVLA.

Anyway, just checked bank and the payment is back in there now.

Thanks

You can instruct your bank to reclaim a Direct Debit, but not a Standing Order. I expect this was a Direct Debit though.
