hey all, I've been having a few problems recently, and I think it's all carb.

It's now colder weather here in australia, and the car is getting hard to start, it's acting like it's been choked on a cold start, and it doesn't take a lot to flood it. So much so that my girlfriend has flooded it every time she's started it.

I thought initially that there might be a issue with ingition but it's got new spark plugs and the coil isn't that old (Aldon electronic igntion too).

I have noticed that the fuel bowl looks slightly wet, like fuel has been seeping through the gasket and down the outsides of the bowl, which prompted me to thinking that the needle may have crap in it and the bowl is overflowing (and the jet) , so I took the bowl lid off, check the needle and seat, and the float all look fine. The gap between the float at the lid is a little over 3/16".

I drove it to work yesterday, and when I arrived I took off the dashpot to see the fuel level in the jet, it's about 1mm below the level of the jet, which is about 1mm below the bridge.  From what I've read this seems right. But if thats the case, why is my bowl weeping and i get the pong of raw fuel (it's been doing that for a while too)?

It was still a bugger to start cold,so what gives?!

If you've not already got a fuel filter fitted, then I would recommend one of the cheap clear plastic ones fitted just before the float chamber. This might help with flooding problems if there is any dirt stopping the float needle seating properly.

Also the float needles with the viton tip seem to seal better in my experience.

The fuel level actually sounds a bit high to me. With the needle (and dashpot) out, the fuel level in the jet should be about 5 - 10 mm down from the bridge. At 1mm, when you fit the needle, I'm pretty sure you'd find that fuel with be flowing out and down the manifold - resulting in flooding, though, curiously, you say the float is set at 3/16" (I set mine at 1/8 to 5/32"). The float isn't punctured or got some fuel in it has it?

This may explain the fuel you are seeing and smelling.

Also, as Carbon has suggested, a fuel filter is also a wise idea.

What fuel pump are you running and have you checked the pressure?

I see that you have done a bit to the Ignition System already, but you do need a really good spark these days with unleaded fuels to get them going before they flood or the plugs foul.

I checked the float for leaks, couldn't see/hear anyything when I shook it and put it up to a strong light.

It's been fitted with a viton needle and seat, and it's running the stock pump, and no filter, It siiting on the desk next to me :|

The line from the hard pipe to the carb is new, and the lines to and from the pump are about 5 years old, as is the pump

this may be unrelated ...

has the seat got a washer, I have seen them without washers , this would raise the level a bit

I have seen fiber washers , alloy & hard rubber washers used (sure fiber isn't original)

+ 1 on filter , the dirt can get stuck on the other side of the seat restricting fuel
