Hi all am I correct to assume on my mk1 I need new sender unit in my tank if I touch the wires together the fuel gauge starts to move and goes to full but when connected to the sender it stays on empty terminals are clean on the send?

The gauge should behave that way, yes.
It does sound like the sender.
