I just dropped my car off this morning at my local mechanic - himself a big Mini fan having tuned and raced them many years ago (he loves working on my car as a distraction from the bland modern-boxes) - to learn that he has finally lost his 13 year legal battle to prevent his garage business of 42 years being bulldozed to make way for a bland, identikit development of flats. The story behind this is one of such corruption and back-handed dealings which was only ever going to be won by the team of lawyers with the deepest pockets and the most brazen lies that I think it is one worth sharing. Richard has worked at this garage since he was 16, ultimately taking the business over and building it up since then, and hiring dozens of local apprentices. To the developer this is a cell on the spreadsheet. To Richard this is his livelihood and his life's work. The whole thing stinks, but is indicative of the way of the modern world where money and corruption strike at the very heart of gentrification. I'm gutted for him.
