Hello,

Earlier in the year I fitted a copper head gasket as a cheap head gasket was previously fitted and failed.  When I fitted new copper gasket, white smoke started to appear to the point it got so bad I've taken it off the road.

Just purchased a new Payen copper head gasket, heads been skimmed, is there a sealant I can use to help the seal? been reading on other forums about applying copper coat to gasket?

Thanks

ian

Honestly, I would use a cheap composite gasket, copper gaskets really only work well on fresh builds having spotless freshly machined surfaces..

Never put sealant on copper gaskets, just make sure block deck and head are completely spotless

You can use Hylomar on Copper Head Gaskets, but be 110% sure the faces are perfect, otherwise you'll wish you'd never seen a Copper Gasket.

This is a timely topic.

I have an acquaintance who just sent me a video of an "oil leak" on his Mini's engine.  The head gasket appears to be leaking in pulses around the vicinity of the heater valve.  What is the current advice on "good" head gaskets to use on a 998?  I am sure I will be helping my friend put a new gasket on in the near future.  I'd like to only have to do this once.

I'd also like to know this as I'm just about to put the head back on my 998

I saw that one listed on various sites but it is out of stock everywhere.  I found threads from earlier this year that suggested it may be NLA.  There appear to be a few other gaskets out there from Payen but they are a copper sandwich gasket like I have on my GT6.

That is what I thought also.  However, my friend sent me a video of the leak and you can see tiny pulses of oil coming out of the gap between the head and block just below the heater valve.  I am not disputing that it shouldn't happen but that is what appears to be going on.  My friend has sheepishly admitted that he removed the nut on the head stud in that vicinity so he could fit a new and polished coil mounting bracket.  He didn't know that what he loosened secured the head and only hand tightened the nut.

Shame as the copper gasket has been problems for lots here on the 998, If I had one I'd use welseal on one and see how that worked out

Yeah, those good-ish gaskets are actually known as Mono-torque. They are no longer made.

As GW said ^^^ For a repair / replacement, I wouldn't be using a Copper Gasket, they are great gaskets but everything really needs to be mickey mouse or they will leak.

Looking at what I could find on the Mini Spares Website, I can't see they have a composite gasket, but I'm sure they are about, that would be the one to go for.

Gr4h4m - yeah, a Cometic is a very good gasket (if the decks are spot on) but a bit hard to justify for this job!

Doug, it sounds like the gasket on your friend's car has failed nearer a push rod hole, but the oil is working it's way around to the front / side of the head.

Just as a side note, IMO, the studing arrangement on these engines is back to front! The side of the deck that has the least surface area has the most fasteners and the shortest, and the side (push rod side) that has the huge expanse to seal has the least number and the longest studs!  Yeah, yeah, everything's a compromise,,,,,,,,,,, but this is just dumb,,,,,,,,

Thanks for all the advice.  I will pass the information along to my friend.

My friend emailed me a few moments ago and now says that he also found anti-freeze leaking.  I have advised him not to start the engine again until this has been sorted.

The reason I said Cometic is the have a rubber compound on both sides which helps the sealing, I run one on mine and so far it's been great if more expensive than the standard choices.
