Hi all I'm new to this forum game but I'm hoping someone can help me. There is a warning light that has the picture of what appears to be a pedal. it is red and flickers on and off. Ive topped up the brake fluid but it hasn't solved the problem can anyone suggest what it may be and what I may need to do. It is a 1972 Mayfair that has been somewhat "adapted" by the previous owner but there is a real lack of decent classic mini assistance locally. Thanks in advance

Something makes me think there isn't much 1972 in that mini.

Anyway, it's the brake test switch. If the light is flickering it means there's something wrong with the braking system, or the circuit.

The mayfair is an 80s mini. That mini is definitely not from 72. Unless its a reshell.

As for the brakes, check the wires on the fluid master cylinder cap are clean and tight.

Thanks for replies as I said it's been adapted the plate is 1972 but the logbook States Mayfair it has metro 1275 engine and brakes and a whole host of other 'changes' I think I'll go for a free brake check and see what happens. Thanks again

Check that there are two wires from the cap of the brake fluid reservoir.  A common problem is that these rust and fall off. if that is the case, it is a simple fix to buy a new cap.

This is exactly what happened on my car, and the broken terminal was touching other metal parts inside the engine bay causing the warning switch to flicker.

I would not bother with a brake test. the warning switch merely tells you that the fluid is too low.

Thats awful advice. What if your braking system springs a leak and you don't know your fluid is low so loose all brakes?

Fix it properly and check it regularly.

Care to elaborate upon how that is bad advice?

Edit: by "test" I was referring to the OPs comment "I think I'll go for a free brake check and see what happens".

i think minisilverbullet is stating that a free brake test from somewhere like kwik fit is a waste of time.

I don't want to open the TMF can of worms, but it's not legally possible to have a 1972 Mayfair.
Good luck with your brake problem.

I believe the posters above were just commenting there is no such thing as a 1972 Mayfair, even in the Mayfair years they didn't have a 1275 engine. We all know cars have been re-shelled over the years and you end up with a mix and match of components. Mine is a 1980 HL and now a 1330 MG Based engine, but a 1980 still.

Then why post?

Because the OP seems like a new owner and I get the feeling doesn't know so should be informed. But in the same respect, I wouldn't want to bombard a new owner with all the discussion and bickering that goes on in the ringers threads.

Is that okay?

Apologies i thought you were suggesting he didn't bother with warning/test switch.
