Ive got q 1275 spi engine in my 1981 mini running on carbs. Does anyone know how i can fit a temperature sensor to it as there is no thread on the block. Also i want to change the cam on it, do i need a spi specific or can any of them fit as i heard the spi block is the same as the older carb models.

Mine has a threaded fitting under thermostat, at front but its not drilled right through. Shouldn't be hard to drill and tap.

Will it not fit in the manifold as per the injected SPi?

go on flea bay and buy a top radiator hose in line adapter. this comes in 28-36mm hose sizes and will have a 1/8NPT tapered hole for you to fit a temperature sender in.....Simple and will cost ya about £10. Oh yeah and about £5 for the 1/8 sender.

If you put it in the hose it won't read correctly, it'll read radiator out put temp.

Where there is an out there has to be an in.

To be accurate it has to be in head/engine. If you have temp sensor in hose and you had jammed thermostat the gauge would read cool whilst the engine would be boiling.

Where could i get the sandwich plate? Or it would be better to just drill and tap where they are on older models? As the hole is allready part drilled( marks allready there.) Caernarfon is in north wales

+1 for sandwich plate and sender, this is what I have done on my 1275 as didn't want to start drilling the block

+1 for drilling it in right place in head. You could just use a small thread one, 1/8" gas or 10x1.0 mm. Just get the right one to suit.

Either way as long as your sensor is engine side of the thermostat you'll get a reading on engine temp
