Hi, reading my Mini Repair Manual 1992-1996, it says to use a cord in the rubber to pull the lip over the glass, but i've always understood you don't use a cord on a Mini as it tears the rubber.

So can you use a cord or not?

A nylon cord will do the job fine.

I have never heard of tearing rubbers using cord..

Never heard of fitting mini screen with a cord. That usually works with other cars but minis are sort of inside out, you fit rubber to opening then screen into rubber (then lock strip)

Hi, thanks for your replies.

I've just looked at the Haynes repair manual and it says fit the rubber to the screen first and then insert a cord into the rubber and fit glass with rubber to car and pull cord ?

I take it most people fit the screen using peter-b method?

I have only ever done it with a cord, exactly as you have just said

No cord needed for the windscreen install however a cord is required for fixed rear side glass.
For the windscreen and rear screen place the rubber on the lip all the way round then place the glass inside the rubber, it will fit fairly easy as the filler strip you put in after is what holds expands the rubber tight against the glass. Remember not to use washing up liquid as it contains salts and will be bad for your paintwork a friendly glass cleaner will be better to act as a lubricant.
You will need a tool similar to this to fit the filler strip http://www.minispare...|Back to search

I used to do mine with a cord until someone showed me the other way, it's now much easier to do it!

I'm going to have to try the other way now then.

I hadn't thought it possible to do it like that. using the cord is just how i was shown.

Ive just done my mk1 front and rear screen I fitted the rubbers to the body then the glaze in on the bottom edge then used a plastic window tool to lip the rubber over the screen (glass cleaner was used for lubrication) once in I pushed on the glaze to make sure of a good fit between body screen and rubber the using the locking strip tool fittedthe strip and small bits that dont go underthe rubber first time you go back to t the end with the plastic tool to lip the rubber over

did mine the other day to fit a new headlining, never used a cord, just seal on opening window in locking strip in. although, after i did it, both locking strips where over an inch too short, which I thought was odd, anyone else had that?
