I've put a lucas reversing light on the boot but when I put it in reverse the wires from the gearbox started melting and the light didn't come on. Should I have used a relay?

Sounds like you have a short circuit somewhere and the circuit isnt suitably fused. Although a relay is worth having they were not fitted as standard so the lack of one is not the cause of your problems. How exactly have you wired it?

Have you got the light wires round the right way, accidently put power wire to light earth, just a thought, easy done.

What wattage is the lamp on the boot? If it is a classic Lucas unit then chances are the wires aren't big enough to carry the current draw. A relay would be the best answer.

I used the original wiring from the gearbox to the boot, then used the same earth as the rear numberplate light. I'll have to check through it for a connector come apart or something.
The light didn't come on at all so something like that is probably the problem.
