What's the best thing to do here? I'm assuming get a new seal but can they be purchased on there own?

Edit:

Sorry the photo's are not good at all, basically some of the plastic has torn where it will meet the race. The metal coil inside has become slightly distorted in the same spot.

Yeap, new seal and yes, can be purchased separately. You can also obtain them from an Industrial Bearing Supplier.

Take it to a Bearing Supplier and he/she'll use the numbers on the seal to cross reference. The numbers will be the dimensions, I used to do just that many years ago when customers would bring in bearings and seals from all sorts of machinery. What they're used for doesn't matter, the numbers are the important bit.

Thanks for the quick replies lads! Unfortunately the chances of finding an industrial bearing suppliers near me are slim and none, I'll have to have a look around and maybe order one online.

So I went to my local suppliers today and sure enough they had the seal I needed, it's slightly different though in that it doesn't have the lip that holds the water shield in place. He told me it would make absolutely no difference but I'm not inclined to trust him. So what do you lads think? Am I good to go or will I order a new one from minispares?

Nearly all the ones I have been using for the past ~15 years haven't had the extra lip and I can say I've had an issue as a result.

Put a thin smear of grease on the outer side of the seal after installing it, then 'stick' the polythene water shedder ring to this with the smear of grease.

I actually found a spare seal in my toolbox after all so I'm sorted :D Good to know that the other seal is fine though, I'll keep it in my toolbox. @A-Cell would you put the grease on even with the correct seal?

The seals need grease on them too, just a smidge, that's half a dollop. Otherwise the friction melts the little buggers.

Yes, just a smear, it stops the seal catching as Peter-b says. On the inner one it holds the polythene water shedder in the correct position during assembly. I also put a very thin smear on the CV joint, where the inner seal fits, and I mean a very thin smear to aid assembly and inhibit corrosion

I'm at the point where I'm putting the bearings in and I realised that I'm not actually sure what to grease. I've packed the bearing as you can see below and I've basically coated the entire thing with grease too. Is this correct? You all said I should lightly grease the seals so I'll do that, do I also need to grease the spacer? I assume I do but it's always better to ask.14409459684731543615525.jpg[/img]
