What can cause the starter motor to whine / squeal on startup? Is the starter on its way out or is it something like bearings needing replaced in the motor? The car still starts fine

Thanks

Mine is purple, but I have been told that's normal

Are you sure it's not the fan belt?

Surely that would whine even when running / idling wont it?? Its only when the key is turned and it stops as soon as you let go of the key.

Check the belt, it's not uncommon for them to only squeel at startup.

I think the Haynes manual shows how to tension properly

Get someone to listen Outside with the bonnet raised when you start the car, it will help pinpoint it.
