Tried the search function for an answer to this one but it doesnt seem to want to work tonight on my phone for some reason. Anyways might seem a bit of a stupid question but should sidelights work without the ignition on, my guages are illuminating but not my headlights but when i try with the ignition on there is a slight pause then the lights come on. No problems from first to second switch position though.

The side and headlights should work without ignition on, well on standard mini's as far as I know. A lot of new cars have the ignition function but not classic mini's. Someone might have had a problem with leaving lights on so wired it up different?

Shouldn't you check now while its dark? :-) :-) :-)
You won't need the lights in the morning.

Sorry, just my sick sense of humour.

Have you looked at the actual lights?

Later Minis have a Dim-Dip relay. It's a pink box under the dash that lights the headlights a part brightness if you try and drive on just the sides.

I would like to bet the side lights aren't working at all, I would check the connections behind the grill.

As Ethel says later cars have a dim dip relay, so with ignition on and light switch in position 1 you should have side lights AND dim dipped beam. If you look closely you should be able to see two bulbs lit.

Ah, I think you maybe right, think im confusing side lights with dipped beam, in which case my side lights arent working at all as you say.

If you have dash and tail lights then odds on it is the bulbs or front end wiring.

If the car has the Dim Dip relay, you can bypass it
