Capillary Water Temp Gauge Not Working

I have one of these gauges

The oil pressure is working fine but the water temp stopped working, the connection to the block is still good, no leaks. The car comes up to temperature fine based on the stock temp gauge in the 3 clock pod but no movement on the capillary gauge. Do these "just quit"?

They will 'quit' if the capillary gets a leak. May not be obvious, but almost certainly, that's what it'll be. Easy to do too.

+1 on that. Being mechanical , something has to have broke or stuck. Have you tried the magic flick of the finger repair?

+1 on that. Being mechanical , something has to have broke or stuck. Have you tried the magic flick of the finger repair?

Tried the tap on the glass "why aren't you working" method and a gentle wiggle of the connection to the gauge. Checked the connection on the block which didn't pull out. If the capillary end is damaged can they be repaired?

Doug I usually do as sometimes the time difference works better here than there. Thanks for your response on MM.

Absolutely.

 

See the link below.  I have used the method described there to fix a half dozen dual gauges.  You have to be careful not to plug the capillary tube when soldering but otherwise the method is straight forward.  The only place I deviate from the method in the link is that I use dry ice instead of the salt/water bath for chilling.

Oh... I forgot to mention one other observation.  Consider this a suggestion to keep you from wasting time.

 

If the gauge has damage to the capillary tube and/or the capillary tube is cut off, only spend your effort trying to repair it if the temperature needle is resting on its lower stop (cold).  If the gauge is stuck in any other (not cold) position, there is a good chance the instrument will need professional repair and calibration.  It's not worth trying to fix those at home.  You will only get frustrated.
