Has anyone tried this yet, normally I would avoid any updates to windows like the plague but some initial reviews seem positive and I have the version 8 that's installed with a passion, so I can see it could possibly be worse?

I have done two from Windows 7 Pro. I have yet to do my Windows 8.1 laptop yet due to issues with a hard drive size upgrade unrelated to Windows 10. Before you do the update, make sure to have a backup of your current OS in case things go wrong. A friend (with a masters degree in digital stuff) of my son screwed up his upgrade from Windows 7 and ended up with neither. Being an older computer he got as part of his degree, he had no Windows 7 Pro media, so he ended up installing Linux. Also read the Windows upgrade FAQ's here:
http://www.microsoft.../windows-10-faq
Additionally, you can download your own copy of Windows 10 for future re-installation. Make sure to get the right one for your version of Windows (Home, Pro, Pro N, 32bit or 64 bit and language) You can create a DVD or a boot-able USB flash memory. The downloaded version will let you do an in place upgrade saving your files and apps (which I did), also the option of keeping the file but not the apps or keeping neither. It can also do a clean install. Get it here:

I have not used it that much yet, but my first impression is that is much more intuitive than Windows 8.1 but it is not Windows 7, so there is a learning curve but not as steep as with Windows 8.1 . My son has upgraded three of his computers and he is convinced that it is faster than Windows 7.
I hope that helps.

thanks for the advice, I haven't got much on this PC that I couldn't download again and all my data is backedup to my cloud storage so should be pretty low risk. Must remember to double check if have downloaded my factory restore disks though (or can actually find them)
Sounds like the upgrade is worth doing, maybe I will setup a project thread for it since I haven't got any work going on the mini's this year

Windows 10 boots faster. I changed from avg as it seemed to cause firefox to lag when opening first time in windows 10

I upgraded from 7 Ultimate x64 to 10 pro x64 on release day and the installation went smoothly. Everything on my computer prior to the upgrade remained with the new installation and it all seemed to work well.
I have had a few issues so far, mainly several crashes (BSOD) trouble downloading apps and it took a week of messing about to get Cortana to work. but lately it seems pretty stable, boots up from power off - ready to use in around 25 seconds and it's handy having tiles in the start menu which take me straight to my e-mail and the weather report for my town etc.
Even my old Dell dinosaur printer works perfectly on it (had issues with it on 7)
Defiantly a million times better than Windows 8/8.1 so worth the upgrade.
I do get a bit fed up with notifications coming up every few days asking me to confirm my identity and Microsoft account however...

It's a hard one really.
If 7 does what you need it to then it's not really worth it.
Windows 10 is supposed to be future proof and they will be just adding to it over the years without releasing another version.
Support for windows 7 will end in around 4 years time so it might be a good idea to upgrade within the year of windows 10 release whilst it is free but then will you still have the same PC in 4 years time anyway?
If not, a new one will come with 10 any way.
You can upgrade to 10 from Vista so why not do it on your Laptop and see if you like it first?

I went from 8 to 10 with the free upgrade as i hate windows 8.
All went well, much improved although windows 8 had to go through several updates to 8.1 before it would allow the free download of Windows 10.
