I've just got my hands on what I think is a Spitfire Speedo for a silly price (pics are from the ebay ad); can someone just confirm which speedo cable fits these?

I *think* that these use the same type of cable as the 2 & 3 clock pods in front of the driver but I'd like someone in the know to verify this :gimme:

Yes - My brother fitted Triumph instruments into a Mini Based kitcar and used a the square end drive cable. If you don't have a cable - drop me a PM.

Yes and no.  I cannot tell from the picture but the black bezel suggests a mid-1970s gauge.  After about 1975 the Triumph speedometer cables "clipped" onto the gauge.  Prior to that, the cables attached with an M12x1 threaded nut... just like other British cars of the period.  The later cars had cables that used a flange and fork to attach to the Triumph gearbox, the earlier cars had the unique 3/4-26 threaded nut to attach them to the gearbox.

Please note the numbers at the bottom of the gauge face, in particular "1000".  That number indicates the gauge is calibrated for 1000 cable turns per mile (TPM).  To use it on your Mini you will need to either 1) have the odometer gearing replaced and analog needle recalibrated, or 2) you need to have an inline ratio converter gearbox made up to adapt the Mini's speedometer cable drive speed matched to the 1000 TPM number.  The ratio gearbox will probably be less expensive than having the gauge converted.  Some will suggest changing the speedometer drive gears in the transmission to match the gauge.  I don't know if that is possible to achieve 1000 TPM.  Guessworks will know.

Someone like Speedycables could probably help ... and recalibrate the speedo too! :-)

I have the necessary amendments available for the gearing thanks to Guessworks' awesome site (and the engine is out of the car) - just need to confirm the cable.

It was a long time ago but I remember swapping the insides over from a mini speedo into a Triumph one, I think it was a 2500S one but. Just an idea. :-)

Mokespider funds are tight at the moment; I was planning on one but the £130 + price of the sender is too much of a luxury right now. A fiver for a mechanical speedo will do for now!

Fair enough and understand 100%.

However, when I looked in to it here in Aust, it was cheaper to buy an electronic speedo than to have a mechanical one recalibrated. Probably a different story in your parts?

Should be OK as already got them. However if I break them...

And Moke Spider in theory the parts I have should suffice. Total cost: about £12 + the cable.

All good if you can get there on changing the drive gears then, easy and cheap!
