Hi All,

I recently had a new engine and gearbox supplied, built and fitted by a mini specialist. I've finished running in the engine to their requirements, not thrashing it, haven't as yet been above 4.5k.

I've taken it back to the supplier after the 1300 miles I did to run it in, so they can do the next oil and filter change and I get the warranty etc.

Since I've had it it crunches on the downshift to 2nd at anything over 30mph. I've been told by the supplier that it may free up and stop with more miles, but I would hope 1300 should have been enough for everything to be smooth! No other gears crunch.
Would this sound reasonable for me to do another thousand miles or should I be demanding they take it apart and sort it?

Thanks for any info :-)

Take it back to the shop and tell them what you told us above.  It is very doubtful that the grinding will go away or get better.

Sort it. It won't get any better, and will do further damage to continue using it that way. If it's only been doing it a short while, it will only need refurishment, but continuing to drive like that will result in damaging 2nd gear and / or the synchro hub too.

This is an issue, and is caused by 'grippy' baulkrings, it's not an issue with 2nd gear not gripping, but rather the baulkring on 3rd being trapped between the mainshaft and 1st motion shaft and causing the gearbox to be dragged round by the 3rd gear, out of synchronisation with the 2nd gear.

There's only one solution, engine out, gearbox off and replace the baulkrings in the 'box, special consideration should be taken by the builder to make sure the gearbox turns by hand when in reverse.

Thanks, the advice is much appreciated. Guess it's going back to them again.
