Sometimes it's a little cheaper on Amazon.

I swear by shell rimula r4x 15 40 mineral.

I run all my cars on it including the turbo mini and never had any trouble. But imagine that you will get lots of advice on this subject.

I use Halfords classic car 20/50 mineral oil, so prefer valvoline vr1 down to choice as long as it is a 20/50 mineral oil

Valvoline VR1 20w-50 Mineral. I race on it-and it has a very high zinc conent which dog engagement gears and g/box baulk rings appreciate. Non-minerals and A-series engines aren't a good mix. Synths find every exit path (and there are plenty) and the long chain synthetic molecule structures that give increased lubrication are soon cut up up by the gearbox in sump design.

To be fair, Penrite, Millers, even old school Duckhams Q 20w-50 Minerals etc are all really safe bets if you can't get Valvoline.

Duckhams Q has been dismissed when Castrol launched the classic line. Which is actually a cheap crappy oil branded in a fancy can.

Eurocarparts have Valvoline VR1 20w50 at £5.29 litre plus an extra 10% off with code 'Extra10', making it £4.76 a litre with free delivery.

Cheapest I have seen anywhere.

Valvoline VR1 20w50 mineral is the best, unless you can get Kendall 20w50 which is the ultimate oil for a Mini.

It looks like I'm in the minority as I'm still using original Castrol 10w40 Magnetec.  Are there any downsides to switching away from this after 50-odd thousand miles with this stuff and the car seemingly happy?

On a related note - has anyone got any views on STP?  On the occasions I've used it, the gear changes seem to get noticeably smoother and my worn synchromesh noises seem to be reduced.  Is it helping things, or masking problems?

Magnatec...thought castrol had dismissed that crap

STP masking problems, yes it is, it wont recover a metal part and when synchromesh are worn the only cure is to replace them

But you dont know if your synchros were actually that bad or there was just a problem due to oil with the incorrect anti friction package..
