Best Answer spiguy , 09 September 2015 - 12:29 PM

First thoughts would be engine mounts / steadies - maybe one is broken allowing engine and gearbox movement?

I have a 1098 engine circa 1979 which is sticking in reveres intermittently. I have to wrestle the stick around and after a minute or so it just returns to normal. The box works perfectly otherwise. There is also loud 'bang' on occasion which kicks in a few seconds after driving off in gear a bit like you dropped the clutch too hard. Any thoughts people?

I would check all engine mounts along with the gear selector "cotton reel" bushes that hold the selector to the tunnel.

Mine done this around 3 years ago the diff shortly after exploded. Could be something nice and simple but could also be very bad. Check all the basics first like above.

Don't like the sound of the bang after you drive off, can you jack it up and spin the wheels and feel for any rough spots in the box/diff

Thanks for the advice, good thought on the mounts, Ill take a look. Hoping its not too bad because it drives really nicely. Any thoughts as to cost on doing a ful engine and box rebuild on a std 1098?

I just want to drop it off and pick it up ver the winter if so.

Well done 'spiguy'. Engine mount on O/S fully detached and causing gear selection problem due to excessive movement.
