Evening TMF,

Edited for clarification: Looking to fit a single bolt front subby to a twin bolt shell!

With the top mounts, will the larger bolt go through the hole in the middle of the two smaller bolts? Will anything need to be done to the shell/towers?

I know the bottom floor mounts are different, but is it a case of just drilling new holes, and reinforcing the floor?

Many thanks,
Will

I think you'd be better off swapping to a single bolt. Especially as twin bolts are rarer you could stick an add up here to swap you twin bolt for a single with cash your way. That way you get a proper subby for the shell and someone else gets an authentic subby for theirs.

Do you mean can you run a single bolt frame in a twin bolt cross member?

If so yes you can. I am doing it and have been for a while along with a lot of others.

Edit.

If you mean putting a twin bolt frame in a single bolt she'll and you're local to Kent,8 will come swap it for a single bolt.

Sorry, should have clarified! It's a 1976 car, with a twin bolt subframe. I'm looking at fitting a single bolt subframe to it (albeit not instantly) for a conversion.

Basically I'm asking, is a lot of work required for fitting a single bolt subby to a twin bolt shell? Just the turrets and bottom mounts, engine/gearbox won't be a series!

What benefits do you see of a single bolt subframe over a twin bolt subframe?

A lot of people opt for single bolt frames and ask this question as all speed only offer modified frames for engine conversions in single frame fitment.

Exactly that ^^^^. I'm looking at buying a engine conversion subframe, but it's for a single bolt car! I'm not doing a conversion this second, but it's on the cards, and the frame is going pretty cheap.

16v shop only sell single bolt frames. I enquired and was told that there are many people running the single bolt frames in earlier twin bolt cars.

I enquired on various other forums and got a lot of good responses before I did it myself.

Now I am doing it, no problems to report.

Everdays a school day :-)

If you supplied your exixting twin bolt - would they modify that?

I've seen it done. I have a twin bolt subframe in my clubby but my pickup is single and there is a strengthening tube in the bulk head on the single bolt so you mite crush the crossmember.

..also reinforcement plates on the toe-board and slight differences (hole location)for the front mountings. Nothing too major compared to doing an engine conversion.

You could make up some plates, with a spacer tube, to sandwich the cross member; using the original twin bolts and in place of the the big bolt rubbers.
