hello from across the pond. My name is mike and im an avid car enthusiast who works on and collects european cars. It is nice to work for a living on something you are passionate about.
this website was mentioned to me from a UK friend whom i have helped out in the past with sourcing parts and information stateside for cars he owned or was working on. Im glad he did so as there is a wealth of information on this board. With that said, i have read through more than 18 pages of key word searches and nothing seems to sync with what im experiencing on this mini. thus i post for some assistance.
car- 199? mini with mpi. why it is unknown- car is titled as a 71 here state side. it was purchased from the uk in the early 00's and shipped over advertised as a 71 w/ later running gear. yet bulkhead etc are all late model--nothing 71 about it. i do not see any identifications to exactly pinpoint the year.
issue- car cranks but no start. when cranking, the fuel pump primes. The coilpack delivers spark. yet my injector does not pulse. if i back probe the injector, it will pulse roughly 2 times on initial crank, act like it wants to fire and then no more injector pulse. If i feed it starting fluid while attempting to start, i can get it to run on the fluid and it dies out once i stop feeding it fluid.
My understanding is if the immobilizer box were bad, id have no fuel pump. I can arm/disarm the immo and get the light on/off the dash. When off i can crank the car no issues fuel pump works and if i disconnect the fuel feed line off the intake it will fill a container up no problem.
What im not following is what actually gives the signal to fire the injectors? My thinking would be crank sensor does ignition as well as the fuel pump. I would think the camshaft sensor that mounts where a mechanical pump would on an older mini is the reference for injection timing. I see i have 12v at the injectors that is fed off the mems relay box, yet my ecu is not pulsing the ground to fire said injectors. thus, if i am not getting a good camshaft sensor reading, then ecu has no reference for when to pulse the injector and no go.
Does this sound correct? Mind you, im doing this with out the aide of a service manual or wiring schematic. More or less back tracking what i see and "reverse engineering" it. Gentleman i got the car from said it stopped wanting to start. Prior to it not starting at all he said if he played with the key fobs it would start every now and then but no consistency to it.
thanks in advance
Mike

Setting aside the issues of a 'cloned' identity ( sounds like just the title is from the 1970s and the car is a late 1990s MPi)....
Sounds like the crank sensor is u/s. If no signal is received by MEMS after initial cranking, fuel isn't injected.
Check connector to it first, they are fairly cheap so in the absence of any code reading equipment it could be worth a chance.
You will get wiring details in the pinned thread (page 3) http://www.theminifo...inning-perhaps/

Thanks FlyingScot. with that info, ill try to back probe crank signal check for a wave form and go from there.

I have the same issue as you. Bought a new crank sensor and hopefully will fit this weekend. I'm desperate for mine to finally start. I'll let you know anyway. The crank sensor was only £40

You can get crank sensors on ebay quite cheaply.
