Just bought gasket kit to replace all when I rebuild engine the main head gasket is aluminiumn on one side and black fibre on the other I assume it goes Ali up it has no marks on it

What size is the engine? What make is the gasket set?
If it is a 1275 the only head gasket I would fit is a BK450 which is black composite both sides.

998 the old gasket that was removed was copper down Ali up

I ran into the same problem and it pisses me off that the manufacturer doesn't mark which way is up. BLACK SIDE UP!

Had a copper gasket once, with helpfully "top" and "front" stamped into it, but if you had "top" upwards, "front" was at the back... and so on. I was rewarded by a failure about 2 months later. Buy the best you can get!
