Hi guys!

I am at the stage where I need to move the engine around quite often, so I was thinking of getting an engine hoist but wasn't quite sure which one! I have looked on Machine Mart and there is a 1tonne Clarke Hoist for £180 whereas there is another on eBay for £115 by dirty pro tools.

Is there any difference between the two apart from the brand name as there is a price gap, and I am trying to conserve money here and use that money to invest in mini parts instead!

Has anyone used a cheaper engine hoist and it still did its job properly or shall I get the Clarke?

Thanks!

Is there not a decent 2nd hands ones near you?

Gumtree, here, eBay, local rag?

Maybe able to save a bit more.

You could hire one from your local tool hire place for about £30 as another option?

Investing in tools is as, if not more important than buying more parts. Buy the right tool to complete the job before buying parts - why? Because if you try and fit the parts using the incorrect tools you could end up buying the part again.

Anyway, that's just a general rule I try and stick to.

Can you link to the two hoists you're looking at? As has been said though, it's worth looking around for second-hand items, my hoist is old and very well used (it's mostly full of engine oil rather than hydraulic fluid these days) but bought cheaply from a guy closing down a garage.

I got one from eBay sounds like the same sort of thing you've been looking at
Great piece of kit would definitely recommend it

I have looked to see if there was any nearby and couldn't find any!

Also another question how heavy would you say a 1275cc A Plus Engine is?

This is is from Machine Mart - https://www.machinem...5-star-products

This one is from eBay - http://www.ebay.co.u...=item58b0bd5424

Cheers

They both look OK to me, the only comment I would make is re the e-bay one the front legs look to be spread at a wider angle than the machine mart one which is good for stability but may be too wide to fit between the mini' s wheels would be worthwhile checking this dimension on any hoist you are considering

I have an ebay one similar (different brand name on it but possibly exactly the same unit), which cost about the same and it's perfectly fine for the mini, engine and box are around 150Kg so even the most lightweight hoist is going to be up to the job.

I think mine is this....

I considered hiring but it seemed uneconomical; I was going to need it at least twice for at least a day at a time and that's assuming all went perfectly well so buying then selling if I don't need it again in the future was likely to be no less expensive and definitely far more flexible than hiring (you do need a little bit of space to store it though, although it folds it's fairly bulky).

Thanks for all of your input guys! Well I think it makes sense as I bought one as I would need to use if quite often and for quite some time so rental is out of the equation, the resale value of these hoist isn't too bad as well.

I think i'll go for the one on ebay as it is the cheapest and can't really find any difference between the clarke and dirty pro tools apart from the make.
