The breather hose between my HS4 and the crank case has split.
Obviously it needs replacing, but what problems should I expect this to have caused?

A leak can screw up fuel mixture making it slightly leaner.

A big leak may cause dust to be sucked by both the carb and the engine breather. But this is the chance of a proper hole and not just a small crak in the hose.
