I'll replace the water pump and report back. But I can't thank you all enough for your help !

 

Yep, that's what I thought it would be, as mine was exactly the same as yours.

 

It's down to the antifreeze not being changed and the system not being flushed in a long time which causes corrosion build up.

 

As 1984mini25 says, make sure you fit a good quality bypass hose and ensure you clean out all of the waterways before you build it back up, otherwise you'll have to take it all back off again.

I've only had the car a few weeks. I don't know the history of the car much. Keith says it is old anti freeze

At least you've found the problem now which is good news.

 

Being as we do live in a hard water area, you might want to use distilled water instead of ordinary water but personally I don't bother.

 

You need to use the blue anti-freeze when you get it built back up, but notice on the bottle that it only has a working life of 2 years so put a note in your diary. Now that you're quite familiar with the cooling system, it really doesn't take much to drain and flush the system and top back up with anti-freeze every two years. People seem to think it lasts forever and ignore it, but as you've found out it deteriorates, causes corrosion and slowly stops doing the job it was intended to do.

 

Keep us posted on how you get on...and maybe a picture of the now healthy patient with its new silicon hoses fitted

There certainly was a big blockage. It was in the connector between the radiator bottom hose and the heater hose.

 

With some reasonable certainty, I can assure you, that will not be the only blockage.

 

Have the entire cooling system professionally cleaned, you are wasting you time otherwise.

Sorry, I'd actually say found part of the problem.

 

If the pump and the top hose looks like this, it won't be limited to these two components.

Other than the engine block itself, I've cleaned or renewed everything in the cooling system (I think)

1. Radiator
2. Hoses
3. Cylinder head take off
4. Thermostat
5. Heater matrix
6. Water pump

So what else do you feel, would constitute the entire system ?
(I do understand that it is not a professional job with all the cleaning chemicals)

Hi Keith, I have a couple of litres of distilled water. I'll use that. Will also renew the antifreeze every two years :)
I haven't got a torque wrench for the water pump. Should I use one ?

The Block and Head. They are probably the two main parts that need to be the cleanest.

I've never bothered using one. As for the antifreeze the cheap pound store stuff is better than just plain water.

Alright ,
Changed the water pump. Didn't use a torque wrench. Fitted new hoses and clips. Fresh antifreeze. Filled the heater matrix through the inlet pipe with funnel. Started the car and bled the system. Drove 10 miles !
The needle sits exactly on the white line. It creeps up a millimeter over the white line and settles back on the line !

I cannot thank you all enough for all your help :)

Please do let me know if you are in Milton Keynes next. Will certainly buy you all a drink :)

Thank you Keith. Well, to be honest it was a collective effort :) So, As I mentioned, "We" sorted it out :)
