Have My Drive Shafts Shrunk?

Best Answer Spider , 04 October 2015 - 04:18 AM

The Inboard CVs don't engage by much in the first place, but they usually don't disengage until you get up around 2 - 2.50 Camber and 3 - 40 of Caster.

Just going back to the Inboard CVs themselves, they can be assembled two ways and are off-set, I'm just wondering if they have been assembled the wrong way around at some point? Having them the wrong way will make them disengage sooner or put another way, move the balls closer to to outside.

Right, think this is sorted now hopefully :-)

I had put the cages on the wrong way around :-|

Undid the top and bottom ball joints, track rod ends, callipers and slid the whole assembly out.

Popped the balls out (bearings) then realised the cage wouldn't go the other way around. Had to tap the driveshaft ends off with a hammer and chisel.

Cage on, ends tapped back on and everything back together.

Cheers everyone,

Hopefully my balls won't fall out again any time soon.

It's awful just having your balls hanging out, let alone having them pop off!

Good work.

The grease is the worst part, it gets everywhere!

Those CV joints can be messy things as well.

You know, I don't mind most things on a car, Oil, Grease, but the two fluids I don't like in the slightest would be Brake Fluid and the top of the list is that god awful CV Grease. It's the Devils Excrement. Even in the parts washer, it just will not break down. As soon as you open a tin of the stuff, it's in your hair, on the back of your shirt, on the bum of your pants, on your underpants, on the boots, on the dog, on the carpet, on your wife and even on the bed sheets,,,,,, and that's before you even dip your finger in it!

But is does work exceptionally well.

For me, the worst is used diff oil (not a problem with the mini though), followed closely by brake fluid.
