1994 Saloon 1275 HIF38

I put my mini through it's NCT (Irish equivalent of the MOT) on Saturday and it failed on emissions (lambda & CO I think I don't have the sheet with me so I don't have the figures but I can post them later). My back box was leaking quite a bit so my mechanic plugged it as it couldn't be welded and I couldn't get a new one in time. Replacing the back box may solve the problem but I'm wondering if anything else I can do?

Check that the air filter doesn't need replacing (or change it anyway), make sure all the engine breathers are clear and take the car for a good run before the test

Thanks Keith. I changed the filter in the last couple of months so I assume it's fine, I'll check anyway just to be sure and I'll check the breathers too. Hopefully the new exhaust will sort it anyway.

Poor exhaust with even pin-holes will not help.

Lean the mixture right off and set the tickover revs to around 1300 rpm. That will help, together with the new exhaust system. In the UK it is permitted to increase the tickover revs for the test.

Remember to re-set the mixture again afterwards or you may damage the engine.

Would that be considered an emissions cheat mechanism Peter ??

A friend of mine used to have a Lotus Excel SE with twin Dellortos, he used to have to lean them right off to the point the engine would barely run to pass the emission test.  All this bunk about VW - We've all been "defeating" the emission test for years lol !!

I understand that it was an instruction to MoT testers many years back when cars with SU carbs, like the Dolomite Sprint, were having emissions issues at tick-over. It is entirely permissible, although, of course, the mixture is not supposed to be re-set afterwards.

VW & others, now do the same sort of thing with their diesels.
