Hi,

A few months ago I added a new RHD blue/black vinyl dash to my mini and it now has 3 dials. Does anyone know how to wire up the amp and oil gage?

Thanks,

Rich

Not many use a amp meter now, as the alternator outputs have risen and it means a large amperage cable coming in from the main brown
being removed from the starter soleniod going into the amp meter and a return going back to where the Brown was removed from. It means having 2 additional wire coming into the cabin and being 100% insulated from the body, if the amp meter dies the car is dead on power. Most now and what I recommend you fit in its place is a volt meter, this will tell you everything you need to know, it requires a switched live, a earth and a feed from the side light circuit for the illumination.

Oil pressure gages are fitted with a T Piece onto the Oil Pressure switch and the nylon or braded steel line brought into the car and onto the gauge, needs a earth and a side light feed for illumination

My mini is an MPi '98 as its modern ... so the engine is very compact. This means striping the lot down to wire two gages up don't it?

No not at all the voltmeter connection is done inside the dash area, and the oil pressure gauge just needs a small bore pipe bringing back into the cabin

Where do you tap off from the engine for the oil?

As Kernow Cooper says, the ammeter has to be installed using cable capable of taking full current. For modern Minis that could be 60 amps or more?

If the cables to the ammeter are too thin there is a risk they will overheat, melt, and possibly start a fire.

Do you know of any videos or websites showing how to wire up the oil and amp gages?

None I know of regarding sites with the info, it would have to be info we advised on here, and you would need god wiring skills to make it safe, but I;d not go down the amp meter route for the reason above, and would you amp meter take 60amps

The gauge is a process of unscrewing the oil pressure switch, screwing in the T Piece and then fitting the oil pressure switch in the end of the T Piece, then connect the supplied pipe to the T Piece, run it into the car being careful to gromett the hole and connect it to the back of the gauge.

I will try that. Thank you for the information.
