Dear all

I have a 1979/80 mini 1000 hatchback. A mechanic has recommended to replace the rear sub frame and valance. Can anybody help me locate all the parts/kits that I need (from minispares for example) in order to give them to the mechanic to do the work. Please include all parts, (even any replacement nuts, bolts, rubber fittings etc).

Secondly, any idea how much this is likely to cost (parts and labour)?

I look forward to your advice so that I can get my mini back on the road.

Thanks

I would have thought that if you were giving the work to a garage to do, then they could supply you a parts list and quote you for the parts / job? If not though, and you are going to have to supply them the parts, then the following list is what I would plan to need if replacing a rear subframe.

I have assumed that you would be replacing the following parts (if you are able or wish to salvage any of them, then you can deduct those from the list / price).

Brake hoses

Brake pipes

Wheel cylinders

Brake shoes

Rear part of handbrake cable

Radius arms

Let's call those 'optional' parts for the purposes of the parts list then. The following I would say are 'essentials' (fairly obviously!):

Subframe x1 @ £190.80
http://www.minispare...r subframe.aspx

subframe Fitting kit x1 @ £27.82
http://www.minispare...Rear/MS45D.aspx
Rear valance £15.74
http://www.minispare...ar valance.aspx

And the 'optional' ones - though I would do all of these with the possible exception of the radius arms, depending on their condition. If they are not recent, or if there is any play in them, then this is a good opportunity to replace them - bear in mind the arms are exchange items, so you need to return your old ones, and there is a surcharge until you do :

Brake cylinders x2 @ £7.80
http://www.minispare...l cylinder.aspx
Brake hoses x2 @ £4.80
http://www.minispare...brake hose.aspx
Brake pipe  (hose to cylinder) x 2@ £6.18
http://www.minispare...brake pipe.aspx
Brake pipe (regulator to offside hose) x1 @ £5.83
http://www.minispare...brake pipe.aspx
Brake pipe (regulator to nearside hose) x1 @ £7.45
http://www.minispare...rakes/Rear.aspx
Brake shoes x 1 set @  £9.30
http://www.minispare...rake shoes.aspx
Handbrake cable rear x1 @ £4.80
http://www.minispare...rake cable.aspx
Radius arm (nearside - exchange part) £64.80
http://www.minispare...Radius arm.aspx
Radius arm (offside - exchange part) £64.80
http://www.minispare...adius arm.aspx|

Note - I am not certain if the subframe fitting kit comes with radius arm bracket bolts, can't remember. The subframe I have linked to does include radius arm brackets, so they might even be bolted into the subframe as supplied. Worth checking with minispares in case you need to order 8 additional bolts for the radius arm brackets.

I would suggest you get an idea from the mechanic as to what he thinks from the 'optional' items, will need replacing.

Also, If your rear valance needs replacing, there is a high risk (unless you know otherwise) that the boot floor and other nearby areas may be rotten and in need of work. If so, then this could all start to grow into something bigger.

I would seriously consider getting a proper quote, or if they are not able to do that, then wonder why. A competent mini person should be able to assess your car and know what they will need to do, and give a decent estimate . If you are using a generic garage who do not have experience of repairing minis, then be very careful.

Total parts cost from above then:

'Best case' (no 'optionals') = about £235 in parts

'Worst case'  (if you need all the stuff) = about £430  in parts (add 2 x £55 surcharge on radius arms, which you get back when you return your old ones)

Then of course you need to add labour (which is hard to estimate as we don't know if other welding work is going to be required.)  Say it was 4-6 hours, then that could be another £200- £300.

And finally - disclaimer time!  I have assumed that non genuine parts are to be used, and also the above is for information only, and is just my opinion of what you would need. Please double check / ask someone else / chat to the guy doing the work etc. As I said already, if the guy is competent to do the job, then he should be more than happy to be able to select all the parts or at least verify what I have listed above.

In your position, I would NOT be comfortable proceeding in a situation where the guy doing the job is leaving you with the responsobility for selecting the correct parts, and all he does is fit them. That would be OK for me personally, as I have done a good few subframe replacements and I am confident about what is required, however since you are asking on here then you are not in that position, and it would be wrong for you to be left with those decisions to make (In my opinion).

Just to prepare you for the worst.....

If the valance needs replaced you may find that the boot floor needs some repairs.

The bolts that go into the heel board often snap, hopefully this area will be solid when the subframe is removed.

Is the subframe rotten?

Dear all, many thanks for the detailed responses. Great help! The rear subframe has failed the MOT and it does look bad in patches. The mechanic (who specializes in welding and was recommended by another garage where I got the MOT done)suggested that I would be most likely patching it every year for the MOT and that it would be more sensible to replace the subframe altogether. He also estimated around 5-6 hours work so that also works well with your advice and potential costs.

SPIGUY: I have replaced all the optional myself apart from the radius arms. The brakes passed the MOT so there are no major issues there whilst the radius arms was not mentioned in the MOT fail notes.

Unless there are any other comments/advice, I will proceed to buy the parts tomorrow.

Thanks again for all of your help.

No probs. Should be OK then with just the subby, fitting kit and valance - though mind what I said about double checking if new radius arm bracket bolts are supplied, either with the subframe or with the fitting kit. Also, bear in mind that subby I linked is an aftermarket one - you can also get 'better' ones for more money, up to you. I have no recent experience of the quality of the current crop of aftermarket subbies, though I have used them in the past without any real issues.

Just double check that I haven't made any errors with parts selection, I checked a couple times myself and think its OK based on your year of car, but make sure you are happy with them too.

Let us know how you get on :-)
