Hi,

When straght ahead or turning slightly right, I am getting a metallic/rubbery sounding scraping /grinding noise from the front. Sounds like it is o/s. It definatly rotational, as it increases in speed, and it changes slightly when braking. The noise disappears when turning left. There is no play in the wheel to indicate bearings are shot, and it passed the MOT last week. It doesn't happen straight away, and begins quietly after say 5 miles of driving, and gradually gets worse, which makes it a pain in the bum for taking it to a garage to be checked out. The MOT tester thought it was the brake shield and bent it away a bit, but no success. I'll cut the damn things off tonight, but anyone have any definate ideas? I can't afford to be replacing things in the hope I hit on the correct things! Muchly appreciated!

It could be a number of things, but if there's definitely no play in the wheel bearings and ball joints (which it would appear there's not if you've checked), then I would say the likely suspect would be the outer CV joint, possibly as a result of a split boot which was maybe missed on the MOT. It could possibly be the inner (pot) CV joint, but it is hard to say exactly. Is there a decent garage (read: not kwik fit, a proper garage!) who could diagnose it reliably for you?

I'd agree on wheel bearing or CV joint. Something hasn't got enough grease in it and is getting hot after those 5 miles.

I did take it to my local garge, and he reckoned the speedo cable was catching. :w00t: So I took it off (horrible job) but the noise was still there. I live near Mantis Mini's, I'll take it up there. I did all the grease points a couple of months ago, so I prob didn't put enough in. :'(
