Im rebuilding my 1991 998 a+ engine and have just tried fitting my new piston rings that I ordered from Minispares and the oil control rings are to thick to fit in the groove, there are also 4 rings in the packaging and the pistons only have 3. I have checked the paperwork that came with them and it says 998 A+ std and the part number is the same on the box as the invoice, has anybody else had this problem or am I going completely mad!.

Just the wrong rings probably, Minispares sells 3 and 4 ring packages, depending on what piston it is.

Best to have a chat with them.

Oil control rings are 3mm or 4mm depending upon piston type, of which there are 3, two of which are circlip gudgeon pins will be a 4mm oil control ring, those which are interference (press) fit will be a 3mm oil control ring.

I suspect you have an R33636 ring pack, but later press fit pistons, I'm surprised any of the rings fit...

You need rover p/n BHM1629 or R43240

I only tried the oil control ring against the bottom groove and did'nt get as far as fitting the other rings once i knew i had a problem, you are correct in that i need the r43240 set as I contacted Gavin at minispares with the size of the old rings.
