Haven't done an outer cv in a while but don't remember having too many problems in the past. The driveshaft is still on the car by the way.

But I just cant get the thing on and have munched a couple of circlips already.

So what's the secret?

Check the clip is completely free, sometimes the groove gets a bur and that will stop the clip from contracting. Also, sometimes the clip gets a twist in it and that will also stop it. If replacing the clip, be sure it doesn't get over-expanded when fitting, it will make life a misery next time it needs to come apart.

Hi

Ebay do some stainless steel cable ties that look ideal and look to be slim enough not to interfere with the hub.. I bought 10 of those nip up ones and broke 3 fitting they have to be dead straight and reasonably tight otherwise the lug sits too high..

Just after reading David's post here, are you asking about the clip on the drive shaft or the tie that holds the boot on?

Yep, i was asking about the circlip on the driveshaft that holds the cv joint on, not the bands that hold the rubber boot on, but useful tip any way - when i get that far.

Push the cv joint onto the end of the drive shaft and hold slight pressure against the circlip, dont try to tap it on yet, use a small flat screwdriver to feed the circlip into the tapered part of the cv joint as far as you can, while keeping pressure against it, once it's level all the way round tap the end of the cv joint with a copper or hide hammer, it'll drop into place easily then.
Sometimes you'll find that while pushing the circlip into place the cv joint will slide onto the drive shaft by hand!
