Hi all,

I was wondeirng if anyone can help/advise and point me in the right direction with my issue with my Mini mayfair 1990.

Engine is 998cc

I was on a journey and was working fine and stopped and then started again to return home and was ok, however got to top of thhe drive and it did a 'BANG!' and then a his noise, I stopped and then the engine turned itself off, I was also low on fuel and just going on the 'red' I am not sure if its a blockage, but left it for a few moments and tried again once cooled.

Now it rattles the engine like when you start the car and keeps going... like little revs and then dies then little revs and dies type sound. It might be a backfire.

Tried some petrol treatment and no luck, the distubitor cap (dizzy) was fine before and hasn't moved. vac pipe all clear and air from the air filter is ok.

Could anyone advise what to look for and how I go about checking etc.

Also choke cable ok

Double check that your grounding strap has not come off/corroded etc.  It is usually on the right side of the engine bay, connected to the clutch housing.

Would have similar symptoms

...it does sound fuel related though

have you popped the lid of the float chamber and see if there is fuel in there? coulld always try the old cap full of fuel down the carb and see if it fires.

The loud bang and his sound rather odd though!!

Just a thought and might be way out. Is the distributor body fixed tightly ie you cant move it? This happened to me once.

It sounds like its strangled is the exhaust clear? Could be a collapsed or partially blocked silencer

Just checked exhaust is clear stuck a metal pole in and nothing there and ok, it could possibly be blocked up but no holes in exhaust (appart from the exit pipe) lol.

Starting to really bug me, but when come to rev more and more and on full choke the engine then dies and does like an engine stall.

Take the plugs out, do they all look the same?

Have you got a compression tester?

Another thought low on fuel .. muck from tank restricting fuel delivery. The bang and hiss made me think of blocked exhaust. it could still be a restriction there not blocked when not running but picked up when actually running.. Easiest way is to tap silencer not too hard and listen for rattles in side.

Thank you David, I will try this tomorrow afternoon and have a good go.

It happened so quickly the bang and hiss noise as I live on top of a hill and maybe fuel becuase was low it might have done that. Thanks David I shall give it a go tomorrow :)

I tapped it with a plank of wood as you do, and still no luck swapped rubber around carb and aur filter box no difference

You havn't mentioned if you've checked that the ground strap is attached

Just watched your vertical video ( people, please turn your phones around ), your choke is fully pulled out for the duration.  I think most of our cars will run like that with the choke fully out.  It should only need pulling out for initial start, then pushed in half.

I would be checking your carb settings, likle fast idle adjustment.

When you push the choke all the way in....does the engine stop?  If so, try turning the idle up until it will run without the choke.
