I've had many minis in my time and this issue has been apparent in some of them,I know most classic cars have that smell of fumes or petrol smell but just wanted to know how bad it is to drive long distances like this?is it quite normal or shouldn't there be any fume smell, car has a 1380 engine which runs great, any opinions great fully received!

has the breather pipe come off your tank? or the pipe is not through the boot floor?

if its exhaust fumes, have any of the joints got leaks,  black soot around them

seal floor drain holes with rubber bungs

make sure you have a good seal, around the gear linkage hole,

make sure there is no leaks in the fuel system front to back, even under the bonnet,

check float bowl seals

check condition of all rubber hoses and clamps, change if needed,

its not normal to have fumes in the car, not really safe, i would get is sorted sooner rather than later , and before you think of going on a long drive.

i don't have any smell in mine,

I changed my boot seal (there was a gap at the bottom of my body mounted seal), which stopped the exhaust fumes being sucked back in to the passenger compartment, if this helps.

I've always presumed it would be coming from the engine but I suppose when thought about it it makes more sense being the exhaust!wish there was someone close to me that knew about minis!!

Engine fumes tell to smell oily and exhaust fumes fuely. Exhaust ones are the bad ones, they can 'sneak up' on you and next thing you know you're suffering carbon monoxide poisoning. You should try to illimnate them. Check any holes in body, try duct tape around boot lid, if that fixes it or improves it, grab a new seal.
