Quick question. can I gain access to the rear damper top nuts to change the dampers by removing the rear seat upright ? I dont fancy pulling two fuel tanks out if I can help it. thanks

What do you mean the rear seat upright? Behind the rear seat cushion is a solid steel panel that seperates the boot from the cabin, this is welded in & removing it will be far more difficult than taking out fuel tanks. Fuel tanks are easy to take out as long as they're nearly empty, it's only a case of removing any plastic shield (model dependent) and undoing the retaining strap bolt. The tank only needs to be moved a bit to get at the nuts.

The seat upright is spot welded in. I think works rally cars cut a hole in the seat back panel on both sides (twin tanks) to create spanner access for a ring spanner onto the shock top nuts.

As above, no access unless you cut holes. You don't need to remove the tanks though, just move them out the way a bit. Remove the strap bolt and swing the strap out of the way, then just wiggle the tank neck through the hole and move the tank just enough to let you in at the nut. Easier if there is not much fuel in the tank of course.

oh yeah, Id forgotten about the metal upright, I was thinking about my mark 2 escort, D'oh.  Ill just unstrap the tanks and move them out the way ( after removing the battery so the right hand tank doesnt short it out of course) thanks for the prompt replies
