My 1974 998 cc engine has a plain pulley (no damper).  I notice that the only pulleys available form minispares incorporate dampers.  Should I upgrade to a damped pulley, and if so, what parts should I install?

The pre-A+ 998 motors did not use a crank damper, just the pressed steel pulley.

I'm not aware of many crankshaft issues with the 998 motors, but they did then go and fit the damper to the A+ 998...

I don't think a crank damper for a road use 998 is really needed.

It rather depends on what sort of revs you will be using.
If you will be regularly going to 7000 rpm+. then fit a pulley with a damper, and have the entire bottom end fully balanced.
If you won't be going to those revs a lot, then it's not necessary.
On an unbalanced engine there might be slightly better smoothness at above around 5000 rpm with a damped pulley.

Any of those crank damper will be useless on a 998 beacuse not tuned to the right frequency.

A 998 crank will not resonate in a 1000-6000 rpm range anyway.

Thanks to all.  I'll stay with the original configuration.
