Hi,

I think petrol is leaking from my Mini, I know it isn't oil. I'm positive it's coming from the engine bay. Where might petrol be leaking?

(I know it's something I should be finding on my own easily enough but I can't be bothered any more to tinker with the little **** any longer than necessary)

Thanks,

Corey.

could be one of the fuel lines or the carb overflow. check around fuel pump and carb inlet with engine running you should be able to see where it is leaking.

Those are mutually exclusive statements.  You cannot find the leak unless you invest the time to look for it.

Clean/wash the engine and allow it to dry.  Once dry, start the engine and while it is idling, look under the bonnet for leaks at the carbs.  If nothing is leaking there, follow the fuel lines back until you find the source of the leak.  If you do not find the leak with the engine idling, turn the engine off and continue to watch for the leak.  Let us know what you observe.

It could be a leaky set of rubber hoses, a worn out float valve, an out of adjustment float valve, a leak in an inline fuel filter, a leak at the pump....  The list can go on.  That's why you have to spend the time looking for the source.

The fuel enters the engine bay via the underfloor solid pipes than has a rubber hose attached that goes to the pump, then off that to the carb. Check all of them. I found my fuel smell turning out to be the pressure hose from the tank had split and was pissing it all over the boot.

If it helps it's a SPI, I've done a basic look over the engine and under the car (whilst it's running) and I can't see anything. It's very intermittent, usually happens when the engine is cold.

It should be obvious from the smell and/or colour what the fluid is ...
