Im wandering if someone can tell me the degree of taper on the crankshaft flywheel end, ive stripped the engine and all journals are fine but i can feel some highspots on the taper so was planning on just giving it a couple of thou lick on external  grinder at work , I don't plan on taking much but am thinking that so long as the flywheel does not interfere with the horseshoe clip then it should be fine !  also are there any recognised flywheel modifications that are worth doing.

Thanks.

Don't know the taper but I would not bother.

Lapping the two together is a better solution.

Thanks nicklouse , I thought that it would be a better option to get it ground before I lap it in due to it not feeling and looking that great, its something that I could carry out in my own machine shop so no cost involved.

Sorry I don't have that info. But still to consider it it must be looking bad. How is th flywheel taper looking?

If they are both needin machine work I would be looking at changing one or both parts.

But again I don't have the info available to allow a judgment to be made.

I just dress the taper up with the diamond lap then lap the flywheel to that, much as Nick has already suggested.

If you reface the crank tail won't that shift the flywheel further back into the transfer case, potentially not clearing castings?

The position of the flywheel face relative to the crankshaft thrust bearing face is critical and if the crank taper is machined it may cause a big problem.

lightly linish the high spots off the crank with emory cloth and lap the flywheel onto the crank with valve grinding paste.

If it is too far gone for this to work, get another crankshaft and flywheel as that will be cheaper in the long run.

Ok thanks for your replies, I wasn't going to get to carried away just basically take the high spots off, maximum 2-3 thou, the flywheel looks good . so will just lap it in and then check to see how true everything is running.
