Hello Chaps.

I am in a bit of a conundrum and have resorted to posting in here, I hope picture requests are allowed!

I have a little project on the side and have come to paint it. I painted a toyota years ago matte black and it looked excellent, real simple to paint and best of all touch ups and replacement panels were a doddle to sort because the paint was cheap, readily available and easily painted.

Some colours and finishes suit certain things better than others, what i am after is some photos of some classic minis in a matte finish.

Obviously I am going to throw a few in that i've found. Reason I ask is because i am hoping someone may have something stashed away in a photo album from years back or a car show.

So please throw some photos in, i need to decide if its a good idea or not.

Glad you think so, I think there is a find line between cheap looking matte and decent looking matte, I'm a little concerned that black may be a little over done.

The white one has a build thread on TurboMinis I think. User is on here as well I think. Pretty sure it has a lairy engine in it. Volvo maybe? The steels are also hydro dipped wood effect. Pretty cool car all together.

I'm just struggling to find examples at the minute.

Personally i prefer satin to matte as its a bit softer and easier to look after. If your planning to paint with rattle cans, then I'd look at Montana black paint as it goes on really well, and if you get bored of satin it'll cut back to a shine

I know what you mean there's a lot of "rat look" matte black cars out there

Having said that the GT at the top looks good with a few details picked out in the red/orange

Thanks for the reply. I've just forked out on some satin and was unsure about using it, threw some on and just don't like it annoyingly! I thought I wasn't going to like it but thought I've got to try it before I dismiss it.

It kind of looks like it's meant to be gloss but come out wrong! I do like it but am not keen on the colour or finish of mine.

Thankfully I have access to a booth and a large compressor so can mix it up and throw in it a gun. Montana is some top drawer stuff though, used to use it years ago.

Looks like we posted at the same time!

Yeah, I think something thrown in there to break it up a little makes it look a little less "ratty". Wondering if decent condition chrome bright work will help with that.

That looks quite impressive. My daily driver is wrapped anthracite matte, very fond of it. I'm guessing yours was originally silver?

I have considered rollering my satin grey in the hope it will achieve more of a matte effect but I have a whole bare shell to do. So I can only imagine it may be a bit of a ball ache in comparison to loading a gun up and blaring everywhere, especially when the paint isn't overly expensive.

I will be painting my mini matte / satin at some point when I get time. My plan is to use Montana 94 Graff paint, so far my tests show it sprays really nicely and leaves a nice finish, also polishes up if I want it shiny.

I like it.

I think the chrome and wheels help to break the colour up a bit.

I'm in a bit of a toss up between black, green or grey.

Now I know its a new MINI (even though i actually quite like them i know some dont) this is for colour purposes only. My round nose with black arches, and details with matte gold wheels seems a decent colour contrast.

It should originally be silver and sort of still is as it's silver hammerite. Purely done to try and smarten up a tatty daily for £50 as apposed to the £1500 for a full proper respray, witch the car will need to be rubbed down for anyways. Plus I'd much rather have a matt/satin tidy rust free mini over a shinny one with loads of rust, or a shinny one I'd be paranoid about leaving in car parks.

Main reason I want to go for matte is ease of painting, cost (£40 for 5l from my supplier) and the fact that if an area becomes damaged or needs to be repaired it can be repainted cheaply, effectively and look half decent. No longer petrified of gravel traps and busy car parks!
