My removed diaphragm spring housing has a balance mark "A" stamped into the assembly.  My new replacement housing does not have a stamped balance mark.  It does however have a painted blue marking near one of the bolt holes.  Is that intended to be the balance mark?

No - that denotes the spring strength; blue being standard.

Chances are it isn't balanced - ideally it would be balanced as part of the whole assembly of flywheel, backplate etc. In reality, unless you are building a high performance engine I don't think it would make much difference.

As GraemeC said, the new discrete parts will not be balanced.  I remember you were in the middle of an engine rebuild so balancing now is probably not possible... depending on how far along you are.  Ideally you would have the pistons balanced as a set, then have the crank balanced, after which the shop would mount the other rotating components on the crank and balance the entire assembly.

Blue diaphragm is std for the 1275 motor.

For 998 should be green marking, and for 850 I think it was brown? If it's an 850 motor I would avoid the blue diaphragm, as the thrust washers are smaller.

My engine is a 998 cc.  The blue-marked diaphragm spring housing is part of minispares kit GCK100AF, which they specify for all pre-Verto clutches.

Corey,

If you still have the old diaphragm spring have a look and see if it has a blob of light green paint.

If it's a green and in good condition I would suggest reusing it.

I do have the original.  It does indeed have a light green paint marking (at the six o'clock position in the image below).   I'm disappointed that Minispares markets the blue-painted unit as applicable to the 998 cc.  Is there any risk that my original parts is fatigued and hence unserviceable?

It's only unusable if you get clutch slip or judder.

Carbon, I have installed the original green spring.  I have been operating the clutch manually by use of a long lever.  The green spring requires only about 50% of the force required to operate the blue spring.  This will result in a much lighter in-service clutch action.  Thank you for your recommendation.
