Hi guys! I bought long ago an hif 44 totally remanufactured. Was in awesome condition. I have it running for like three years now and I can´t reach same max speed I did with my hs4. It seems to have more torque but nothing really exciting...

At the moment my config is:

Distributor: 123 at curve 4

Coil: Bosch Grey

Spark Plugs: NGK BP8EIX

Engine: 1310cc + Some modified cam (done in my country)

Compression: It is a high compression. Like 11:1

Carburettor: Hif 44 + K&N (cone) + BBW needle

Also, today I decided to open the carb and it was completely black, like something is not running good at all. It seems to have a lot of fuel compumption. I use an old electric fuel pump.

What would you recommend me doing?

Thanks

Agustin

Hi Agustin ,

An HIF 44 should be fine for your 1310,  I would recommend you have your engine setup on a rolling road if you know a garage or workshop that has one as, this is really the only way to have the engine setup to run at it,s best.

+1. The HIF 44 was fitted as standard to the 1275 Coopers before they went over to fuel injection in the early 90s so is a good carb to have and leaves a lot of tuning potential before you ever have to think of anything bigger. Hard to comment on the rest of you engine as there seens to be a lot of unknowns.

Your sparkplugs are way too cold.

Like Dusky says, your spark plugs sound a bit on the cold side, an NGK BP7ES would be better, even a BP6ES.

What do you mean the carb was completely black?  The inside of the carb or the outside?  Some pictures might help with that question.

Bp6 for a standard engine, on hotter engines its a bit of hit and miss to Find the right one :)

I have a HIF44 with Cone filter on my 970 S engine. Also have a 123 distributor with no vacuum advance. After lots of road tests and Air/fuel ratio trials, I have found that a BBW needle and Curve F works the best for me. I have 10:1 compression ratio, and a 731 cam.

If I can get mine to work on a 970, then 1310 should be ok too. I also run BP7ES plugs

Thanks for your help!!! I will be testing to use curve 6, but I have not a racing cam. Also it feels too rich in low/mid range (2000-3500) but then it goes ok. Also missing some hi speed end, it just went 140kph last weekend :(

I've heard that none of the curves on the 123 distributors are ideal, maybe a reasonable compromise, but not ideal...
