Hi,

In my Mini at the moment I have what I believe to be an early A+ engine, it has the newer alternator bracket but still a pre-verto clutch. I also believe it was from an Austin Allegro 1300 originally. I have just bought another Austin Allegro 1300 from 1976 with a pre A+ engine with the intention of swapping it into my mini and then rebuilding the one currently in there.

My current gearbox is very worn out. Most gears have to be held in most of the time and it crunches even when the clutch is fully disengaged (I'm pretty sure it's not because of a bad master/slave cylinder too). Once I have finished rebuilding the A+ which is in the Mini at the moment, I would like to use the gearbox from the pre A+ Allegro engine. Is this possible or are they incompatible? If it helps, here are the engine numbers from each vehicle:

A+ Engine currently in Mini, to be rebuilt: 12H706AAHZ28240

Pre A+ engine currently in Allegro, to be swapped into Mini: 12H515AA110570

I don't have the gearbox numbers at the moment (do they have numbers?) but I can find them if someone could tell me where they're located if that would help.

Thanks very much for reading

So if I've read it right you're putting the pre A+ engine and box in, then later putting the A+ engine on the same (pre A+) box. That should work fine. Just remember to use the clutch housing to match the gearbox.

gearboxes are not defined by the + or no +

just about any gearbox for an A series engine will fit on any A series engine.

what does matter is using the compleat transmission assy. (as mentioned above) as the idler gear shaft changed size you will also need the correct drop gears.

so now we come to will the gear linkage fit. if they are both the same type and that fits your car you are fine.

fitting ealier types require mods to the tunnel.
