Hello fellow Mini Lovers. I have one of these dreaded engines with the No missing. I have given it a clean today for photos to see if there are any telltale signs to say what it is.. SPi MPi old Metro or possibly MG Metro. I have taken some photos for you to view and see what we can notice on the engine.

Another question is if its a SPi or MPi will it still run on a std HIF44. Not sure about these new engines I was a points and feeler guages guy back when I was 19...lol 42 now... Anyhow not sure if the injection models are different compressions or whaat..

Anyhow the photos...

It's not an MPi, they didn't have dizzy holes.

It looks like an SPI, the engine number isn't missing its just rusty, etched on the flat area of the block just below where the thermostat goes in the head

Ah if that is the case MiniMad I will have a look tomorrow when back on it. I was looking for the ally plate rivited to the block at the front right near the thr thermostat... 12H or 99H I recall but if its changed... I will look.

So will the SPi run ok on a std HIF44 ?

Looks the same as my '92 1275 with electronic dizzy (65dm4) and hif44. Mine has the crank sensor holder as well and the other little brackets on clutch housing.

My engine number starts 12A2BG03

Not necessarily why do you think it will be Cooper spec ? Even if it is an Spi the vast majority of them were bog standard 50 horse models. As noted above during the transition period between carb and injection many parts were the same.

You only need a crank sensor for injection models

OK. So no need for another item. Brilliant. I wasn't sure if the crank sensor had some realationship with the Electronic Dizzy... see last time I played with these it was points...and condenser....
