Kawasaki ZZR1100 - some numpty before me has over tightened the sump nut and its put a tiny hair line crack on it. Question is, can the be patched up with a few blobs of weld? Its an ally sump pan - not mega expensive to replace and quite a simple job by the looks of it, ie can be done with engine in bike.

You will need to remove it as it will need to be spotlessly clean and heated up. The crack can then be welded from the inside

I'd take round to a welder and let them have a look, Type alloy welders in google should show you some local to you

You'll need to get the Oil right out of not only the crack, but the paws of the metal as well. It would likely weld up OK, but see if you can find out how much Magnesium is in the alloy first as above a certain percentage it may not be done.

cheers for the fast replies all! The drain plug goes into long tube/sleeve like part of the sump, its not flat like a mini gearbox, about an inch or so long, you'd never be able to weld from the inside, the threads are there too. I was thinking more like a band aid, to weld a few blobs on the outside..? Its seeping less than your average mini when left to cool so may just live with it for now.
Cheers!

The other thing you could try is Lumiweld - the aluminium welding rods that work at temperatures archived by a blow lamp so won't melt the casting. The case would need a good clean up. Frost sell it and their stuff is usually good and well tested
