MOT - Expires 12th November 2016.

One of the last Checkmates made, registered 30/08/1990. These were a limited edition car in the same series as the Flame and Racing Green which ran from 1989-1990. Approximately 3000 were made and only around 300 survive. Many of those survivors will have been modified, changed colour etc like so many minis do, with some minor expections this car has been restored to factory spec and is original.

This car was fully restored during the first six months of 2014, the whole car was stripped to a shell, all rust was cut out and replaced with new panels, followed by a full respray and then put back together. Therfore, there is no rust on this car! I have over 300 photos showing every bit of work completed. Also any consumable items, rubber joints, mountings, brakes, bearings etc were replaced upon re-build.

The car has a 998cc engine fitted, it has twin carbs which I believe were fitted when the car was new, this was a factory option at the time. I have since fitted a 3 into 1 maniflow exhaust manifold, new centre box and new RC40 back box. These are the only modifications to the car and the only items that are not factory original. The car drives well, its not the quickest but it keeps up well with modern traffic and is more than capable on the motorway. In April 2015 I replaced the head gasket (it had not failed, I just wanted to do it), whilst the head was off I refurbed the carbs, fitted a new waterpump, thermostat, temperature sender, throttle cable, engine mounts, fan belt and gave it a full service Oil, filters, ignition system). All of this was completed approx 1500 miles ago. The next service is due at 69000 miles (I have serviced it every 3000 miles)

Insurance is cheap (less than £100 a year for me fully comp) and running costs are very low, £28 fills the tank and you can expect to return about 32MPG. Spares are readily available from a variety of sources.

The interior is standard but is the cooper spec, again this is factory fitted and was part of the checkmate design. It also benifits from being fully sound deadened with Dynomat and has a sound system with a retail value of £2000, this consists of a Pioneer DAB Radio/CD with bluetooth and micrphone, two front speakers, a large amp and a 10inch sub woofer. The cables alone used for this sound system retail at £200!

The car is ready to drive away, I have been using it daily since the middle of 2014 to get to work and back, it has never broken down and has always been reliable for me whatever the weather, there are however some items that would require attention in the near future: -
- The choke cable has broken - this happened earlier in the year but as the weather was warm it hasn't caused me a problem, now its getting colder its getting harder to start.
- There are some small dents in the wings, this happened when the head gasket was changed and I lent on the wing, I was quite annoyed!
- The drivers seat is worn, but still presentable, it is not frayed or holed.
- The boot lock doesn't lock (very easy to replace)
- The switch for the rear fog light had to be relocated when the speakers were fitted. This is currently lying on the dash (still connected and working) but should really be in the centre consol with the other switches, since you will need to remove this centre consol to fit the new choke cable you can put this in at the same time very easily.
- The rear tyres are old and could do with replacing, however have plenty of tread on them.
- According to the MOT man both outer CV boots are perished and will need replacing before the next MOT.
- According to the MOT man the front brakes are 'fluctuating' - whatever that means?!

That sumarises everything, but if you wish to keep reading below is a list of all of the items that have been replaced during the restoration and my ownership, as you will find out there really isnt much that hasnt been done, to a point its a new car! If you dont wish to read on, thanks for reading to here, please feel free to ask me any questions. Viewing welcome by appointment. Test drive possible on production of adequate insurance cover, otherwise I drive and you are the passenger.
