Hi all. Anyone have any experience of changing these? I know Ben O has had a little experience with these engines... ;-)

The Haynes manual and owners manual refer to priming the fuel system manually with the bulb, but mine doesn't have that from what I can tell. It does have a transfer pump somewhere that whirrs when ignition on II.

the fuel filter hasn't been changed in 60k and was going to change it next oil change.

It has approx 5 fuel line ports with colour coded clip type push fit unions.

Is it just a case of old one out, new one in and then let the pump prime the system automatically?

Any advice gratefully received.

Jim

If it doesn't nave a primer on you will need to prime the system. You can buy specialist equipment, vacuum pump, for doing that particular job. What possessed you to buy a diesel Renault? O_O

It cost me £900, its now done 160k, it does 45mpg + on motorway, it just got another years mot without spending anything on it. It is what it is. A workhorse that i can get the kids and kid associated kit in. Now ive said that the turbo will probably let go tomorrow. :-)

So will the lift pump between the fuel tank and the filter not prime the system? I find it strange that Haynes and owners manual don't mention using separate kit to prime it?

With most diesel engines you need to prime it at the filter, after changing it, unless it has one of those primer bulbs. I know certain engines you don't need to prime, but can't for the the life of me remember which. Take it into a garage, and save yourself the hassle. :highfive:

Fill the new filter with diesel before fitting?

That might be an idea. Its a sealed unit from what I recall when I bought the last one 4 years ago. A friend of a friend changed it then and I have no idea what process they followed.

Maybe they filled it through the inlet pipe.

I don't know where all the hate comes from for the Dci Renaults.

They go wrong because people don't look after them. admittedly Renault were a bit optimistic with the service schedules but i do mine every 3-4000 miles and it never lets me down returning over 50MPg urban.

As Jime says, it is what it is. A cheap economical workhorse.

Anyway, as far as i remember, they filters self prime with the pump so just swap them round and let the pump pull the fuel through.

Don't quote me on that but i am sure that is what i did..

Cheers Ben. They get a bad press. People forget the same engine has been used in Nissan qashqai, Vauxhall vivaro and various Suzuki and mitsubishi.

Is yours the one with the sealed canister and coloured unions and a cylindrical lift pump that is somewhere near the wheel arch, below the filter Ben?

The ones I gooogle seem to be ones where you change the paper element inside.

Yes, mine is the sealed canister. I believe all phase 2 Dci's had them

if it doesn't have a bulb to prime then it has a lift pump. either way just leave the diesel in the canister and you'll be fine.

That's the issue though. You change the whole cannister. Not the paper element inside.
