Hi guys have purchased a mini racing red flame checkmate for my 15 year son and myself to restore as a project we are complete novices and been researching the model as stated on the log book but how do we find out if this is a cooper performance kit added extra ???

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have one of them too, - a good place to start would be to find out of it is a flame, racing green or checkmate, as I believe that I heard somewhere that it was only the racing green that was offered with the conversion (I could be wrong though)

they were the 1990 limited edition, you either got the flame red, racing green or the checkmate black.

they are known as the 'mini racing flame red checkmate' because of the way that they did the edition (they sold a cumilative total of 2500)

Yes we found that out, but think we need to check for a nr plate to see if it is a cooper performance. The thing is the car has a few cooper parts to it and just wondered if the previous owner had just put them on or were they original with the car?

Hi again, I had a look at the brochure I have for the car, - the easiest way to tell is that the cooper was twin carb and the standard only has 1 carb.

a cooper engine:

a standard (my) engine (sorry for the goggles - it was the best photo I could find):

Might be worth getting in touch with the guys who run the Cooper Conversions page on Facebook - they may know of the car via a previous owner if it was Cooper converted from new, or even if it had a kit fitted at a later date. https://www.facebook...933693/?fref=ts

Good luck with the restoration!

If it's red it's a 'Flame Red'...Rover registered the 1989 Racing (Green) and Flame (Red) as one model for reasons best known to them, and did the same in 1990 with the Racing Green, Flame Red and Checkmate models.

Because of the colours, these were the preferred base for the initial Cooper conversions though by 1990 Rover were already marketing the RSP Cooper themselves.

I bought my panels from Minispares - heritage panels they are pricey but good quality compared to pattern parts

Some people on here rate m machine panels but I have no experience of them
