Apologies if this has been covered before and I'm sure it has. Getting towards the last stages of my mini refurb. The last few bits left for me before paint is to clean off the rear arch tubs. They are quite rusted and pitted but not holed and pass the screw driver test. So my plan is to remove the loose stuff with some abrasive, treat with jenolite and paint with por15 gravitex and top coats.

Now the actual question is what is best to use product/ tool wise to remove as much of the loose stuff easy and relatively quickly. I don't get too much time for my project unfortunately but want to get things atleast in por15 as the weather is getting rubbish and my garage unfortunately isn't that great.

Thanks chaps

If you aren't going to replace pitted metal then get all the paint off and use BlitHamber Deox Gel. Terrific stuff. Longer you can leave it on there the better as long as you don't let it dry out.

It's not that bad still solid and has some years in it. What is the best abrasive/ tool to remove the paint and loose rust quickly with the dodgy shape etc of the arch tubs. Wil get some of that gel stuff ordered too thanks,

No worries will do. As a side note does any one know of any one who has made any rear arch protectors I am aware they are available for the front and intend on getting a set but not the back and find that kinda odd.

The POR15 needs light rusting to work properly, so don't take it back to shiny steel, just remove the heavy and flaky bits.

POR 15 Is great stuff. My floor and arches still look new.

Shame I can't say the same about the boot floor which i've found (thankfully reactively small) hole, so the POR 15 may see some action again after some welding!

Deox Gel is great stuff but it's 'enviro friendly' and has none of those nasty ingredients in it that can boil your eyes  :nuke:

For surface corrosion I use phosphoric acid. Its certainly not enviro friendly and you do need to wear gloves but it works .... very well.

I find this with bike de-greasers too. The 'nice to the planet' stuff with that citrus crap in it is useless. It cleans road grime off but for actual de greasing its like a chocolate tea pot.

For de-greasing my bike chains I use Gunk. It stinks, is horrendous for the environment but there is NO grease or grime left on the chain once its done.

I use 25%. 85% is considered total and is corrosive, so at 25% it is effective but ok to use.
