Head gasket has gone on my 1978 1000 Leyland Mini.

Have seen many topics on bad head gaskets and was wondering what gaskets you guys would recommend?

I live in New Zealand so might be slightly more limited than the UK.

I have found this set on a local NZ mini spares, http://www.classicmi...l-bore-inc-plus

Guessing this is the correct gasket, just don't want to have to repeat the process because of a bad/wrong gasket.

Thanks in advance.

Olly

If this is a standard car, i.e. not tuned, or only very mildly tuned, I don't see why that should not be ok, but they do say that they also have the genuine item (except that it is currently out of stock).

Gaskets don't usually fail without a reason, so I would advise a very light head skim, just to ensure it is totally flat, before fitting. Unless of course, you know why it failed.

Remember to torque up correctly, and again after 500 miles or so. 998s tend to be quite reliable as they are not as stressed as 1275s and above, which do need a gasket of well above average quality.

It would be worthwhile ringing around some of the auto parts stores to see if any of them may have a Mono-torque. They have stopped making them, but I've found a few in unlikely places. They are a very good gasket.

The Copper ones like in that kit are good BUT only if the deck of the block and head are 110% perfect, otherwise it'll be your worst nightmare.

I personally would call Lee at Minibitz, he will give you all the advice you need and sell you the correct parts for the right application. Great guy. Really knows minis inside out. I get a bit of stuff through him. Never been disappointed.
