Over two years ago I stripped my Mk2 saloon down, including taking the headlining, on its frame, out.  The time has come to re-instate it, but what is the best technique?  Which section goes in first, the font or the rear in order to be able to get it to clip together?  Is there enough room for sound deadening material behind it?

Any advice would be welcome.

On my estate I'm sure the rear goes in first then the front slides over as its pushed towards. Then the interior light screws through into the roof support

That is what I expected, but it seems that the rear is not sitting far enough back to allow the front to slide far enough back to engage its tongues in the slots and then sit on the cant rail at the front.  It looks like my frame may be distorted, but how do I re-jig it to fit I wonder......

Sometimes helps with a little polish on the bars, but never an easy job to do.

They are easy to bend and tweak a bit. I think from memory we stuck the back in and up then levered it up, as opposed to trying to slide it directly back in, if that makes sense. So it kinda snaps up and into the roof space

The problem is, Dr S, that I have been bending it and tweaking a bit too much I think and it is now misshapen.  I plan to strip off the old lining, which is now damaged, re-shape it to fit in and then recover it before another attempt at installation.

About to try the re-install again after recovering it.  Is there meant to be any sound deadening material stuck to the roof and if so what type and thickness?  There does not seem to be much of a gap between the frame and the roof.

My mk1 deluxe registered 1962 had nothing on the roof but my mk2 registered 1968 has felt glued to the roof, same stuff as what's on the rear wheel arches probably about 6-8mm thick

The early cars had 1/4 inch thick brown soundproofing felt stuck to the roof behind the headlining.

Thanks guys.  I have some 3mm self-adhesive sound absorbing foam, perhaps I will try that.
